What is the SMS Sender ID Register in Australia

What is a Sender ID?
The name or number in the “from” field. It is how the customer knows who texted them.
It can be:
- A business 04 (the BE Messaging service number — two-way, inbox, cases, MMS, voice)
- A brand name (alphanumeric Sender ID, e.g.
YourBrand) — one-way; replies do not come back to that name - A service name (e.g.
BEAlert)
What is an alphanumeric Sender ID?
A custom from-name instead of a mobile number. Recognisable. Better open rates on Campaigns.
Because it is not a number, customers cannot reply to the brand name. Campaign SMS still ends with “Reply STOP to opt out”; they text STOP to your company 04 and that mobile is added to the company do-not-send list. On BE Messaging, conversational traffic stays on the 04. Campaigns may send from the Sender ID.
In Australia, alphanumeric Sender IDs must be on the ACMA SMS Sender ID Register. Unregistered IDs are over-stamped Unverified or blocked.
What is the SMS Sender ID Register?
A federal register to stop spoofing — scammers sending as ATO, myGov, AusPost, or your brand.
Businesses that send SMS with a brand name must register it. Only verified IDs should pass. Anything else: Unverified, or blocked.
Why it exists
SMS scams have cost Australians hundreds of millions. The register is meant to:
- Protect people from fake brand texts
- Stop scammers using trusted names
- Put trust back into SMS
For a business: claim your name so someone else cannot wear it.
Who can register
ABN entities, companies, sole traders, partnerships, trusts, government, and other bodies ACMA lists. The person who clicks must be a Business Administrator — director, owner, or someone with authority to bind the organisation. They will need myID and ABR details that match.
Valid use case (ACMA)
The Sender ID must be the same as, a contraction, acronym, or initialism of:
- A registered business name (ASIC, registered)
- A registered company name (ABR, active)
- A registered trade mark (IP Australia)
- A registered domain used for a real site or email (WHOIS)
Format (ACMA)
- 2–11 characters
- Letters, numbers, allowed symbols (e.g.
+,-,&) - Must start with a letter; no leading/trailing space or underscore
- Not numbers-only
- Not the word

If you are still sending an unregistered brand name, fix it now. Do not wait.
If you do not register
- Campaigns show as Unverified or do not arrive
- Missed appointments, OTPs, “your order is ready”
- Brand damage
- Someone else may still be able to look like you if you never claimed the name

04 vs Sender ID on BE Messaging

- The exact Sender ID string(s)
- Proof it matches name, trade mark, or domain
- One-line use case (e.g. “order and campaign SMS for the Shopify store”)
How to register
Work with Binary Elements — an ACMA Certified Telco and Sender ID Agent — to register. Confirm in ACMA Assist, then send on Campaigns. This is not a form inside this portal.
- Appoint a Business Administrator.
- Set up myID and fix ABR if it is stale.
- Work with Binary Elements (ACMA Certified Telco and Sender ID Agent) to register your alphanumeric Sender ID.
- Confirm the registration in ACMA Assist when ACMA emails
@acma.gov.au. - Send Campaigns from that ID on BE Messaging.
